OpenAI confirmed the UK launch on 6 June 2026. The announcement was made by Benji Shomair, OpenAI’s VP of Monetisation, via LinkedIn. The UK is the first European market in the pilot, following the US (February 2026) and Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (March 2026).

Who sees the ads?

ChatGPT Ads are shown to users on the Free and Go subscription tiers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers do not see advertising. The Free and Go tiers account for the large majority of ChatGPT’s active user base.

How does targeting work?

Rather than keyword bidding, advertisers submit “context hints” – descriptions of the types of conversations and topics where their business is relevant. OpenAI’s system matches ads to conversations based on topic, context, and intent signals. There is no traditional keyword auction.

Is there a minimum spend?

The US minimum (originally up to $250,000) has been removed entirely. UK access is currently managed – we can advise on realistic test budgets for your sector and goals once we understand your business.

Does advertising influence ChatGPT’s answers?

No. OpenAI has been explicit on this. Ads appear beneath the AI-generated answer, clearly labelled as sponsored, and visually separated from organic content. The response itself is not affected.

Is conversion tracking available?

Yes, when configured via the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API. Cost-per-action (CPA) bidding is also entering early access for UK advertisers.

How does this fit with our existing Google Ads activity?

The two channels are complementary rather than competing. Google Ads captures intent at the keyword level. ChatGPT Ads capture intent at the conversation level – often earlier in the research process. For most businesses, the right approach is to test ChatGPT Ads alongside existing paid search rather than replacing it.
